Still the busy me

February 2nd, 2009 |

All still on track. Halfway through the Salsa-lessons we’re already doing a pretty decent job there, starting to learn first figures and such. The whole movement is a little clumsy still, but hey – it’s being said that it takes a year to get “okay” at Salsa, so plenty of time for more practicing. I’m soaked into this stuff way deeper than I’d imagined. Dancing – and I tell you this from the deepest deeps of my macho-ish manly deepness – is one hell of a good time. And the whole instructor-callage “ladies, more hip-action!” thing helps, too. I like the ladies’ hips action.

As for the cocktail-mission I’m persuing, that one’s also right on schedule, or way ahead. Here we go with last week’s drinks:

  • Planter’s Punch – fruity and slightly sourish drink, lots of fruit decorations (annoying if you try to avoid straws), but it’s a solid cocktail
  • Kamikaze – the name says it all. rough, aggressive
  • Gimlet – gin and lemon juice, suprise: tastes like gin with lemon juice! An okay drink
  • Sex On The Beach – out of the Planter’s Punch range, also fruity and sourish, not bad (my trusted barkeeper recommended that instead of a Manhatten: “A Manhattan is a dry, strong, straightforward cocktail, not so good before dancing.”)
  • Manhattan – dry, strong, straightforward cocktail, not so good before, neither after dancing
  • Rum Sour – a classic out of the “[whatever] sour” gang. If you like sour, this is good. If you don’t like sour, well, order something that’s not got “sour” in the name
  • Gin Fizz – also on the sour-bitterish side there’s the Gin Fizz. Goes down smoothly, a nice finish for a solid drinking evening

I’m starting to realize that it’s probably better not to mix various sorts of liquor on one cocktail-taste-evening. Kind of makes it harder to distinguish similar drinks, so my advice for anyone trying something like this: Stick to one category per evening and go deep – not broad across the menu.
