Grid-Based Design
March 26th, 2008 |It’s rather usual in print-design to use grid-based layouts, whereas the web still has to catch up with that (mostly due to the inability of a lot of self-claimed webdesigners I’d say). It’s certainly harder to work with a grid-based layout, because you’ll have to take care of source code, and many folks who work on websites still can’t even read the HTML their WYSIWYG-editors produce, not even mentioning understanding CSS.
Well, to all those who are willing to make that effort there are plenty resources out there, technical as well as theoretical, and one of the greatest collections to be posted since quite some time is this article: Grid-Based Design: Six Creative Column Techniques. Following the resources mentioned there you’ll also – like so many times when it comes to articles about professional web design – Khoi Vinh’s page Substraction, where you can find a link to a downloadable pdf-presentation about a fictional case study at the end of the article Oh Yeeaahh!.
Have fun with the resources and switch to grid-based designs already!
